Lately I
have been having a little trouble falling asleep, so I have mad a few
adjustments in my nighttime routine that I thought I would share with you.
1.
Every
night before I go to bed I take a shower to relax and wash away the stress of
the day. I try to take my showers as close to my bedtime as possible, otherwise
I get wound up again if there is too much time between my shower and bed.
2.
Comfortable
pajamas are a must. I know most people prefer the typical pajama bottoms, but I
prefer to sleep in legging type pants and a fitted shirt – it always bothers me
when pj material gets tangled up in the night… I also wear sock that come up to
my knee to bed… I bet the image you have in your head is the epitome of a nerd.
3.
Once
I am showered and have on my pajamas complete with ridiculously long socks, I
brush my teeth and put on some Clinique youth surge face cream – after all, who
wants to have a dry face? We sleep about one-third of our lives on a mattress, so you should take sleeping very seriously. I found some interesting tips from topmattress.com that mentioned a few tricks to fall asleep faster on your mattress; if interested you should read them.
4.
Up
until a few weeks ago once in bed I used to check my phone, social media, write
a blog post etc. Now the last time I look at my phone is before I get in the
shower. I also used to write my blog post right after I slipped under my bed
covers, but now I try to write them before I take a shower and schedule them to
go up at a certain time. This change I believe has helped tons!
5.
Since
I no longer check my phone right before bed or write a blog post I dive right
into a good book and drink some water while I read. I recently picked up The
Silkworm by Robert Galeraith and cannot wait to start it!
6.
When
I start to feel that wonderful feeling of sleep come on I close my book, turn
out my lights, and sleep off to the land of Wynken, Blyken, and Nod
You're on the right track with the shower before bed thing! Our bodies need a body temperature slightly higher than normal to sleep soundly. That's why experts suggest a warm shower or bath before bed for good sleep or sleeping in a cold room. Sleeping in a cold room makes our bodies warm themselves up that extra degree.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find the routine that's right for you!

I did not know that our bodies needed to be slightly warmer to get a good nights sleep - that is definitely good information to know!
DeleteUsing my phone or laptop before bed is what I used to do all the time. But it really does keep you up...glad you pointed that out :)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check out Silkworm. I love reading before bed!

Silkworm is slow to start but it really starts to pick up after the first 100 pages!
DeleteI put my phone away 1 hour before I go to bed each night, it definitely has helped prepare my brain for sleep.
