How I Organize My Closet

I will be the first to admit that I am a little on the OCD side and as weird as it sounds I actually get a lot of enjoyment out of organizing things. Another fact about myself, I am a little bit of a clothes hoarder… Some of my dresses I have had since I was 18, but in my defense some designs just don’t go out of style, I have a sentimental attachment to some things, and it is the next thing to a criminal to get rid of a Lilly Pulitzer dress, unless the style it obviously dated.

As far as hanging items go I have my closet divided into dresses, tops, and skirts, then I fold all of my sweaters, pants, leggings, shorts, puffer vests, work out clothes, scarves and sweatshirts.
For my dresses, tops, and skirts I first have them divided by season then by color category, and incase you were wondering I do consider Lilly prints their own category...
I keep my handbags on a top shelf in my closet then store my clutches inside my larger handbags to save room and to help my totes and large handbags maintain their shape.
For the shelving section the top shelf is sweater for the basic reason that there is just more room height wise, the second shelf is puffer vests, pants, and leggings – divided by color, of course. The third shelf contains shorts and workout clothes. And Finally the last shelf {not pictured very well} holds scarves, sweatshirts, and pullovers, basically the comfy clothes shelf.
I know it’s probably a little weird but with the exception or running shoes and rain boots, I keep all of my other shoes in the boxes they came in. I feel like as long as shoes are store properly they tend to last longer and as an added bonus the protection of the box keeps seasonal shoes from become dusty till they are in season again.

How do you organize your closet?

  1. I love posts like this! So neat to see how everyone else organizes their life. I also sort by color and season/type for tops and dresses. I used to store my shoes in their boxes, too, and think it is so much better for them but I finally resorted to a regular rack when we moved houses and my husband and i had to share a closet for the first time.

    1. I love to see how people organize their closets as well! I'm also glad to hear you organize your closet by color/season as well - it makes me feel a little less OCD!
