I remember the first time I read
A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, was in my seventh grade literature
class. I have to admit at the time being in the seventh grade and thirteen I
was dreading this reading assignment. Of course everyone had seen the movie A
Christmas Carol {my personal favorite version is the George C. Scott Scrooge}
but in my thirteen-year-old frame of mind I was thinking, “how on earth could a
book by Charles Dickens be anything but boring”. Within the first few minutes
of reading A Christmas Carol I was smitten with the storyline, language,
writing, and everything about the book. In almost every single case I have
found that the book is better than the movie and A Christmas Carol is no
exception. If you have any free time this holiday season I strongly recommend
you read this book, it will definitely put you in the Christmas spirit!
The main character of A
Christmas Carol, Scrooge, made some decisions earlier in life, which lead him
down the road to a life that made him bitter, consumed with greed and money,
and a lonely lifestyle. On the eve of Christmas Scrooge is visited by his old
business partner, Marley, who forewarns Scrooge that he will be visited by
three ghosts, Past, Present, and Future; Marley also uses himself as an example
to demonstrated what Scrooge will become if he fails to change his ways. The
ghost of Christmas Past reminds Scrooge of his childhood and the life he could
have had, the ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge how people who are currently
connected to him are affected by his decisions, and Christmas Future shows
Scrooge what will become of him if he fails to change his way. One of my
favorite messages this book relays is that it is never too late to change ones
path in life and have a fresh take on our daily lifestyle and the world around
us. Needless to say A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, is a timeless
Christmas classic.

DeleteI love this one too. I read it for the first time a few years ago and understood immediately why it's a classic. I loved all the nuances and messages. It's a pretty brilliant story.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a brilliant story, it is almost hard to believe Charles Dickens wrote such a wonderful story in just six weeks! A Christmas Carol sends such a great message.
DeleteI read A Christmas Carol for the second time as a requirement for an upper-level English course near the end of my degree and I have re-read it every year since. It is such a wonderful classic to help get you in the mood for the holiday season!
