The Sugar Queen

The SugarQueen, by Sarah Addison Allen, is yet another book I read while I was at the beach back in August. Oh, how I wish I were sitting beach side right now with a book in hand…one can always dream. The Sugar Queen is the last of the books I read at the beach, but just like The Peach Keeper, which was written by the same author, it is a wonderful book. Just like The Peach Keeper The Sugar Queen has a ghostly magic about the story line.

Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of a Josey, young woman whose passions, dreams, and old family secrets that surface will alter her life forever; fortunately for Josey these changes will alter her life in a positive way. Josey has settled into an uneventful life at her mother’s, as a consolation she has a stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she uses as an escape from reality. One night Josey finds Della Lee Baker, a local waitress, who is for lack of a better word living in Josey’s closet. Della Lee ends up being a fairy godmother in disguise for Josey. Through Della Lee’s tough and honest love Josey narrow existence starts to expand.

Della Lee with her constant request of grilled cheese sandwiches leads Josey to Chloe Finley. Chloe is around Josey’s age, and a special relationship with books, which magical appear and sometimes hound her to read them. Josey soon finds out that Chloe has a close relationship to her longtime crush. Very soon Josey is living in a world of friendship, love, magic, and mystery.

The SugarQueen is a book of warmth, charm, and magic – another wonderful read by Sarah Addison Allen. It is the perfect book to read on a long weekend, and as an added bonus the cover of the book is remindful of the Christmas season, or at least for me it is.
