So I am
definitely one of those people that is guilty of reading a young adult novel
every now and then… However, some decently great books are in the young adult
category: The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, John Green books, just to name a few.
All The Bright Places, by Jennifer Niven, although a bit of a sad story is
definitely one of those books.
Violet, a
high school student who lives for the future and is counting down the days till
graduation when she can escape the small town she lives in, meets Finch, a boy
fascinated by death by death and not quite sure who he is as a person, under
unusual circumstances. One day on top of the school bell tower both Finch and
Violet are up there contemplating jumping off – Finch notices Violet and quite literally
talks her off the edge and breaths life back into her existence again. Violet
also ends up saving Finch that day simply by being at the same place at the
same time.
When
Finch and Violet team up together to do a project to discover the natural
wonder of their state, they end up making more important discoveries about each
other and themselves. Being in Violet’s company allows Finch to be who he
really is and Finch makes Violet stop wanting to count away the days and start
living in the moment.
All The BrightPlaces is the type of book that you will find yourself saying “just one more
chapter then I’ll go to bed”. It is a book with a lot of heart and shows the
importance of finding the bight spots in everyday life.
