Unwinding

I never truly realize how important it is to unwind before going to bed until I have those rare nights or that rare week where it seems almost impossible to unwind. I haven’t the slightest clue why but for the past few nights I have gotten in bed and I have had the feeling of I need to do something but I can’t remember what that something is. I am 99.99% sure that I haven’t forgotten to do something I was supposed to or haven’t written down tasks to be completed on a to-do list; as far as I know all my ducks are in a row, Whenever I hit these rare nights/weeks I have a few things I implement to help me go to bed, get a good nights rest, and have a great start to the morning.

Below are some of the things I do to help myself unwind:
1.               Stop watching TV at least an hour before I plan on going to bed
2.             Drink some water
3.             Take a shower right before I get in bed; in my book there is nothing more relaxing than a warm shower right before bed
4.             Listen to some classical or mellow music at a low volume
5.             Light a scented candle
6.             Wear your most comfortable pair of pajamas to bed
7.              Read a book – preferably one that is low key and will aid you in falling asleep, save the page turners for the daytime
8.             It is a proven fact that people sleep better when their room is dark and the air conditioner/heater is set at a lower temperature than it would be during the day. That being said I try and implement these two things.

What Are Some Things You Do At Night To Unwind?

  3. Great list! I put away electronics (I heard the light they emanate isn't good for us when we're trying to sleep), light a dim lamp, turn off overhead lights, and read.

  6. Unwinding is so hard but there is nothing worse than laying in bed not able to sleep.

I force myself to put my computer and phone across the room and just try and relax in bed. Removes temptation to check emails, tweet, etc.

  11. These are great tips! I try to take a shower before I go to sleep but sometimes I just skip it. I do however always rub some type of lavender smelling lotion on my body and that usually helps me unwind and fall asleep.
