So… last
week I was completely and utterly exhausted – my lack of sleep finally caught
up with me and all I wanted to do was read a book and go to bed early. My blog
posts may not have been consistent last week, I apologize for that, but on the
plus side there are a few book reviews and recommendations on the horizon!
Whether
you choose to admit so or not everyone indulges in a fun/guilty pleasure/
purely for enjoyment read every now and then. Last week my fun/guilty pleasure
read was Girl Online by Zoe Sugg and I loved it. I honestly could not put the
thing down; I blew through it in about 3 days.
Girl
Online is Zoe Sugg’s first novel, and let me just say she hit it out of the
park on her first try. This book is probably more of a “young adult” novel,
more suitable for those in high school and early 20s, but honestly I think a
fair amount of people past that age range would find this novel to be a fun
read. Girl Online is a coming of age novel about what it is like to grow up in
today’s digital world, and the impact/roll social media and such plays in
ordinary everyday life.
Penny,
the main character of the book, faces all the trials, insecurities, drama,
friend issues, etc. that we have all at one point in time faced in high school.
Penny Choose to express her authentic self {opinions, uncertainties, fears,
panic attacks, every day problems, dreams, etc.} on her blog that she publishes
under the alias, GirlOnline. Penny’s parents accept an opportunity to take a
trip to New York in order to get the family away for a little while, after
Penny who is already having a hard time at school, goes viral, in a negative
way.
While
Penny’s parents are busy planning a wedding at the Waldorf Astoria she has an accentual
run-in with the caterer’s grandson, Noah. Penny starts to fall for the guitar
player, who just happens to look like a “rock star” and starts to capture every
moment she spends with him on her blog, referring to him as “Brooklyn Boy”.
Between
Penny’s blog, that no one knows about with the exception of her best friend,
and secret Noah is harboring, drama is soon to make an appearance.
Zoe Sugg’s
first novel perfectly captures the highs and lows that our younger selves have
all faced at some point in time. If you are in search for a fun, light,
entertain book, Girl Online is definitely a book you should look into reading!
