Guest Post :: 5 Rules For How To Make A Perfect Cup Of Coffee At Home

I know there are some people who can’t start their day till they have that first cup of coffee, my sister and my dad, being two of those type of people. I on the other hand am not the biggest fan of coffee; unless I need a serious energy bump, I will choose hot chocolate over coffee any day of the week. However, I have had enough coffee to know that taking that first sip from a perfect cup of coffee can make all the difference in the world, but when it’s a bad tasting first sip, it’s just not good at all… I have become one of those people who is seriously spoiled by all the experienced baristas at Starbucks and have the hardest time fixing a proper cup of coffee from the comforts of my own home. Today Peter Minkoff is guest posting and sharing the 5 rules for making a perfect cup of coffee at home!
David Lynch once said that “even a bad cup of coffee is better than no coffee at all,” but why would anyone want to drink coffee that is anything less than perfect? Coffee is the magic potion that makes the transition from sleep to being awake smooth, and it is only natural that you want to have it in the comfort of your home as soon as you wake up. But for that, you will not have help from a barista; you will have to prepare it on your own. Don’t worry; it’s not as difficult as you may think. Here are five rules that’ll get you there.

Buy Fresh Beans and Store Them Properly
You wouldn’t eat fruits that are left on the shelf for weeks, would you? Because fruits that aren’t fresh don’t taste well. It is the same with coffee beans. Try to buy your beans from local sellers to ensure they are freshly roasted or roast them yourself.

It is important to know that fresh beans don’t stay fresh forever. You can prolong their quality by storing them properly. Store them in an airtight container such as glass jars and ceramic pots with rubber gaskets. Keep the container at room temperature.
Get the Best Coffee Beans

Choosing coffee beans is not much different than choosing wines. You need to be aware of their origin and type. The two most famous types of coffee are Arabica and Robusta. Robusta is more frequently found in your local grocery store, but Arabica is believed to be better, because it comes in a wider variety of flavors. You can also opt for a blend of your personal choice to give you the kick you need in the morning.

Choose the Right Equipment
Coffee equipment should be chosen based on your needs (speed, ease of maintenance, different coffee styles), but you should never skimp on quality. For ease of use, you should always go with a machine with a pre-packaged coffee pod slot, so that you can choose different brews and flavors. For coffee purists, the possibility of controlling the temperature and various brewing styles is a huge plus. A common drip coffee machine is ideal for this purpose. Taking care of your equipment and cleaning it properly also plays a vital role in the taste of the coffee.
Be Precise

A delicious cup of coffee is made of a proper amount of water and coffee. We all know that H2O makes the major part of this happy marriage, but how much water should we put and how much coffee to add? There are some variables that will impact the proportions you will use, such as whether the coffee course or finely ground. However, to avoid complications, we’ll give you some basic guidelines to follow:
Add 0.36oz of coffee per 6oz cup.
An average coffee cup is about 6 ounces.
A coffee mug on the other side is about 8 ounces.
Use a coffee scoop to measure 0.36oz of coffee, or measure two tablespoons of coffee.
You can get a digital scale for perfect precision.
If you want your coffee stronger or milder, you’ll soon figure out how much coffee works for you.

Use Good Water and Filters
Tap water is often packed with chlorine, which tastes off and can affect the flavor of your coffee. Therefore, you should install a water filter on your tap, or buy quality spring water. The temperature of the water also has an impact on the coffee taste. The hotter the water is, the more flavors you’ll extract from the beans. As for the filters, there are three options that are acceptable for coffee purists: oxygen-bleached, dioxin-free and gold-plated.
There is no better way to start your morning than with a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. But we’ve got news for you: that coffee is not going to make itself. Use these rules to conquer the delicate art of making delicious coffee.
